Is Your New Home Too Dangerous? Sell It Fast and Find a Better One!

Did you recently move into a new home, and you’ve been discovering issues that were not disclosed to you before? We won’t sugarcoat this because it is annoying to find so many things to repair in your home after you just shelled out a considerable amount of money. While you feel your home seller should have told you about everything, they’re not legally obligated to do so unless you ask for them.

Unfortunately, some home sellers skip on a few facts about the house, especially when they feel it would make their prospective buyers back out — quite unfair for you, yes. In other circumstances, some home sellers just don’t know about the problem you’re facing — like those who didn’t know they had century-old underground cellars!

Whatever their reason was for not informing you, don’t dwell on it anymore so much because it would only cause you more stress. There are suitable solutions you can move forward with and get back the money you spent.

But first, can you tell us what’s wrong with your home?

Common Issues Homebuyers Face After Moving In

You are not the only buyer who has reported property issues immediately after moving in. This is, sadly, quite common, especially for homes that have been vacant for so long.  In fact, a 2021 survey by Angi reported that about 80% of 1000 new homeowners in the U.S. faced surprise repair costs after moving in.

Below are five (5) of the most common problems homeowners found in their new homes. Do you have any of these?

Electrical Malfunctions

Do your power outlets spark, or you’re experiencing power trips frequently? These are clear signs of an electrical system that needs repair. We highly recommend prioritizing electrical issues because they can develop into bigger, more dangerous problems like residential fires if left unfixed.

Other signs of possible electrical issues include:

  • Overheating appliances
  • Flickering lights
  • Power switches that give minor electrical shocks
  • Noisy circuit breakers
  • Buzzing noises behind the walls or live wires

Plumbing Issues

Is the water pressure in the faucets too low, or you’re not getting enough hot water as you should? A variety of reasons can cause changes in water pressure. These include:

  • Loose valves
  • Corroded pipes
  • Leaking pipes
  • Burst pipes

There are different types of residential plumbing systems, and since most water supplies come from public distribution pipes, sometimes the cause of the problem is not within your home. So, after you try tightening all the valves in your system and still have the same issues, contact a licensed professional plumber who can assess your entire plumbing system right the first time.

Unfortunately, many home appraisers don’t inspect plumbing systems as thoroughly as they do with the structure. Minor issues don’t get noticed unless the home has a very obvious broken pipe.

Cosmetic Issues

Is the paint starting to flake and peel from one of your rooms, and it’s happening fast? This usually occurs when the previous homeowner painted the wall haphazardly just to prep it for sale. Don’t worry; you don’t always have to repaint the entire wall unless you don’t have the exact paint shade as the original.

Here are the steps to remedy the area yourself:

  1. Using a scraper, remove all the loose or flaking paint from the damaged area.
  2. Dust off the damaged area with a damp rag.
  3. Apply a thin layer of patching material to the area using a putty knife.
  4. Wait for the patching material to dry.
  5. Using 220-grit sandpaper, smoothen the area until it’s even with the rest of the wall.
  6. Remove any excess dust.
  7. Paint the area the right way, starting with a primer, followed by the actual paint.

Water Damage

Did you discover mold or plenty of discoloration in some areas of the house? That’s a massive sign of water damage. Water damage is tricky to repair, mainly when it has caused other damages. The best thing you can do here is to contact professionals immediately because they have the right tools and protective equipment to handle all the issues right away.

When to Know That a New Home Is Not Worth It Anymore?

This depends on your situation. For plenty of homeowners, budget is a key factor. When they realize the necessary repairs are too expensive, they either take out a renovation loan or start looking for a better property. If the damages put your safety at risk all the time, especially if you’re living with children, the elderly, or differently-abled persons, you may want to prioritize deciding what to do right away.
